ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To examine the influence of exogenous fat (lard) on the bone mineral density (BMD) of lumbar spine measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometer (DXA) Hologic QDR 4500A in different sites in healthy women.@*METHODS@#Lard packets (5 cm or 10 cm thick) were prepared. The lumbar spine (LS) DXA scans were performed on 37 women(Group A), who were repeated with lard packets (5 cm or 10 cm thick) placed over the abdomen, and the hip DXA scans were performed on 18 women(Group B), who were repeated with lard packets (5 cm or 10 cm thick) placed over the left thigh. Whole body DXA scans were performed on 8 women(Group C), who were repeated with 5 cm thick lard packets over the abdomen. The pair t-test was used to compare the value of BMD with and without lard.@*RESULTS@#After lard was placed over abdomen, the bone area (BA), bone mineral content (BMC), and BMD of the LS decreased significantly (P0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#Lard impacted the BMD by DXA Hologic QDR 4500A, BMD of the LS significantly decreases, but BMD of the whole body has no significant change. BMD of the hip significantly increases with lard.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the regional homogeneity of resting state brain activity in early onset schizophrenia using functional magnetic resonance imaging.@*METHODS@#Schizophrenia or schizophreniform disorder was diagnosed according to DSM-IV-TR (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, fourth edition, text revision). A total of 18 adolescents with early-onset schizophrenia (EOS; onset of psychotic symptoms by age 18) and 18 age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers were tested in a resting-state fMRI scan. Regional homogeneity approach was used to analyze the functional imaging data, and statistical parametric mapping 5 (SPM5)was used to perform t-test in ReHo maps between the patients and controls.@*RESULTS@#In comparison with the controls, the early-onset patients showed significantly decreased regional homogeneity in bilateral medial prefrontal cortex(P20), but no brain regions showed significantly increased regional homogeneity in the patients.@*CONCLUSION@#Regional homogeneity of resting state brain activities in EOS was decreased in bilateral medial prefrontal cortex. These abnormal changes may be involved in the psychopathology of schizophrenia.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To evaluate the effect of herceptin(trastuzumab) plus adjuvant chemotherapy on the prognosis of patients with human epithelial growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) positive early-stage breast cancer by Meta-analysis.@*METHODS@#Search all of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on herceptin plus adjuvant chemotherapy for HER2 positive early-stage breast cancer in MEDLINE, EMBase, Cochrane library, Clinical Trails, ASCO Conference data, CHKD, Wanfang Database, VIP information, scholar.google.com and SIGLE. A Meta-analysis was carried out by collecting information based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria from all papers available.@*RESULTS@#The Meta-analysis included 4 trials. A total of 9116 patients were included in the analysis(4555 in the study group and 4561 in the control group). There were statistical differences between the study group(herceptin plus adjuvant chemotherapy) and the control group(adjuvant chemotherapy) in the disease-free survival rate [relative risk(RR)=1.08, 95% CI, 1.06-1.09, P<0.001], the overall survival rate(RR=1.01, 95% CI, 1.01-1.02, P=0.0003), the distant recurrence rate(RR=0.49, 95% CI, 0.42-0.57, P<0.001), and the cardiac events rate (RR=3.93,95% CI, 1.03-15.06, P=0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#Herceptin plus adjuvant chemotherapy can improve the disease-free survival rate and the overall survival rate, decrease distant recurrence rate of patients with HER2 positive early-stage breast cancer, but may cause heart toxicity, especially when combined with anthracycline (doxorubicin).

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUNDEarly diagnosis and timely treatment are important for improving therapeutic efficiency of prostate cancer. DNA array is a new bio-technology for disease diagnosis. This study was conducted to diagnose prostate cancer with cDNA macroarray and analysis gene expression profiles of some selective genes in prostate cancer.

METHODSTotal RNA was isolated from patients with prostate cancer and from normal people, and poly (A) RNA was further purified. Then it was analyzed for differentially expressed genes in prostate cancer and normal prostate by cDNA macroarray system.

RESULTSThere were different expressions in the nine prostate-associated specific genes in prostate cancer as compared with normal prostate, in which, 7 were significantly upregulated and 2 were down-regulated.

CONCLUSIONAs a diagnostic approach at molecular level, the cDNA macroarray is an effectively diagnostic method for prostate cancer.
